Volume 08 · Business strategy

Choose a direction before the business chooses one for you.

Being busy is not a strategy. A strategy helps the owner decide what to build next, what to say no to, and how to notice whether the business is moving toward a real destination.

4 connected chaptersBuild a direction, test growth options, look closely at competitors, then check the whole picture.
One clearer choiceReplace “we should grow” with a specific path the business can afford to pursue.
Fewer costly detoursSee the trade-offs before committing people, cash, and attention to the wrong move.
A REAL DECISION

The business is doing well. What should happen next?

A customer asks for a second location.

The owner also sees online orders growing, a wholesaler wants a meeting, and a friend suggests franchising. Each idea sounds like growth. Each demands different cash, people, systems, and risk.

Strategy is the discipline of choosing one sensible move before excitement makes the choice for you.

THE STRATEGY PATH

Ask four questions before you commit.

Where are we trying to go?

Set near, medium, and longer-term goals that make the next decision easier.

How could we get there?

Compare expansion paths instead of treating every opportunity as the same kind of growth.

What is happening around us?

Understand customers, competitors, and the conditions that could change the plan.

What should we do next?

Use a simple whole-business check to turn observations into a focused choice.

One question for this week

What would success look like one year from now?

Write one plain answer. Name the customer, the result, and the capability the business needs to build. If the answer cannot guide a choice this week, make it smaller until it can.
