Definition

Imagine a small stitching flaw is missed. It travels from the workshop, through packaging, into a delivery box, into a customer's hands. She notices it a week later, after wearing the garment once. What would have cost three minutes to fix at the cutting table now costs a full refund, a returned order, and a customer who tells her friends not to order from this shop again.

An inspection point

is a defined moment in production where output is checked against Chapter 1's quality standard before it's allowed to move further.

Why does it matter exactly where something gets checked, not just whether it eventually gets checked at all? Because the same flaw doesn't cost the same amount everywhere along the line. Fix it in raw fabric and it costs a metre of cloth. Fix it after a customer has already worn the garment and it costs the sale, the trust, and the redo. Inspection points exist to catch problems while they're still cheap.

The single biggest lever in quality control isn't a stricter standard, it's catching a problem earlier. The same flaw costs almost nothing to fix at the raw-material stage and can cost the entire sale, plus reputation, once it reaches a customer.

The earlier a defect is caught, the cheaper it is to fix. A flaw caught at the fabric stage costs a metre of cloth; the same flaw caught after delivery costs the sale, the reputation, and the redo.

How Much to Inspect

100% inspection

Every single unit is checked. Best for small batches, high-value items, critical functions.

Sampling

A fair sample of the batch is checked. Best for large batches, where checking every unit isn't practical.

Spot checks

Unannounced checks on specific items or workstations. Best for deterring drift from the standard between full inspections.

This mirrors Volume 13, Chapter 2's counting methods almost exactly, full counts, rotating checks, and spot checks, applied to quality instead of quantity.

Why the Inspector Shouldn't Be the Maker

Just as Volume 11's purchase triangle keeps ordering, receiving, and paying separate, a final inspection carries more weight when it isn't performed solely by the person who made the item. Not because makers are dishonest, but because nobody reliably catches their own blind spots at the same rate an independent check does.

Example Story: The Inspection Point That Was Missing

Here's the full version of the missed-flaw story from the start of this chapter.

MANIAC MINDZ's only quality check at the time was a quick final glance before packaging. A stitching defect slipped past it, reached a customer, and came back as a full refund and a damaged relationship.

One new inspection point was added, held by someone other than the person doing the sewing, checking mid-production instead of only at the end. It caught the same category of defect twice in its first month alone. Each catch cost a few minutes. Neither one cost a refund.

Common Mistakes

Common Mistake #1: Only Inspecting at the Very End

"Check some of them sometimes" isn't a method, it's a guess, and it guarantees inconsistent coverage.
